”Labyrinth” was commissioned by PAUHA-trio in 2024, as part of their concert tour with the theme “Paris & London”. The other works on the tour program were related to these two cities in one way or another, and Paris was chosen as my starting point.I started composing by circling seven stations on the Paris metro map that were located near places that were memorable and meaningful to me. After this, I “routed” each of the three instruments from one station to another so that the instruments’ route intersected at one of the stations. These routes and the places surrounding them serve as a starting point for how the mood and other elements of the music develop as the piece progresses.The idea of a labyrinth is also present in the piece on other levels – in the music you can hear twisting and winding textures that repeatedly return to the same points and hesitantly continue in new directions. The form can be thought of as a journey during which familiar things slowly change, merge, disappear, and take on new meanings.
