No sane composer in this day and age would describe himself as a National Romantic; yet the currently (again) revived interest in folk tradition somehow mirrors some of the values and aesthetics of National Romanticism. Of course, in discussing the great Finnish National Romantic poet Eino Leino we need not necessarily think of him primarily as a National Romantic poet,even though in his collection Helkavirsiä (‘Whitsongs’) he created an immensely effective mock-epic in traditional folk poem style, fully in keeping with the spirit of the times. Leino’s poetry, although firmly rooted in its period, is quite universal - in the case of Kouta we have not so much a quintessentially Finnish tale as a universally applicable story of power and arrogance. Kouta himself is a [Finno-Ugric] shaman whose lust for power ultimately destroys him. He is the most powerful sorcerer in the land, and yet he is compelled to seek the power that he still lacks: the power to conjure back the past, i.e. to control death. Too late he learns that ultimate power means sacrificing everything, even life itself.Curiously, there are two possible interpretations as to the character of Kouta: he can be either a greatly talented arrogant young man or an old and worldly-wise sage who despite his experience still desires that which he cannot reach. Although he comes to a bad end, the story as a whole does not come across as altogether melancholy; rather, Kouta captures our admiration much like Prometheus, another mythical mortal who dared stand up to the gods and was horribly punished.The musical material in Kouta is not derived from traditional sources; in fact, it is largely based on a wholly synthetic symmetrical scale (1/2 - 1 -1/2 - 1). The scale is not held to strictly, though. The music does reflect the ballad-like characteristics of the text in that there is very little development - the musical elements are repeated in much the same guise each time they occur. The music rarely leaves the basic tonality of F sharp except for the section with Mother Time, where the tonal centre is D.Structurally, the text yields obvious threefold repetitions typical of traditional ballads: there are three ‘travel’ sections, the last of which takes Kouta to his death, and in the central dialogue between the Earth-spirit and Kouta there are three question-answer pairs, a test Kouta has to pass in his quest. The choir functions as a fairly straightforward narrator; a separate spoken Narrator part appears in the central dialogue because the character of the scene would be disrupted otherwise. The only real reason for having a three-part Earth-spirit (a bit like Cerberus, if you like) and a two-part Mother Time (singing in octaves) is to create an unearthly sound for these supernatural beings.Kouta was premiered at my composition concert at the Helsinki Chamber Choir Week in March 1998 by Topi Lehtipuu (br), Tuuli Oksanen (s), Teppo Tolonen (countertenor + narrator), the Tapiola Chamber Choir and the Sibelius Academy Ensemble, with myself conducting.© Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, 1999Kukaan täysijärkinen säveltäjä ei näinä päivinä sanoisi itseään kansallisromantikoksi; ja kuitenkin nykyään (taas) virinnyt kiinnostus kansanperinteeseen heijastaa jotenkin kansallisromantiikan arvoja ja estetiikkaa. Tosin Eino Leinosta puhuttaessa häntä ei tarvitse käsitellä ensisijaisesti kansallisromanttisena runoilijana, vaikka hän kokoelmassaan Helkavirsiä loikin erittäin tehokkaan jäljitelmän suomalaisesta kansanrunosta täysin ajan hengen mukaisesti. Leinon runous, olkoonkin että se on tiukasti sidoksissa aikaansa, on hyvin yleismaailmallista - Koudan tapauksessa kyseessä ei niinkään ole perisuomalainen tarina kuin yleispätevä kertomus mahdista ja ylimielisyydestä. Kouta itse on [suomalais-ugrilainen] shamaani, jonka vallanhimo lopulta tuhoaa. Hän on maan suurin tietäjä, mutta silti hänen on etsittävä sitä mahtia, joka häneltä vielä puuttuu: taitoa manata mennyt takaisin, ts. hallita kuolemaa. Liian myöhään hän oppii, että mahtavimman voiman vuoksi on uhrattava kaikki, jopa elämä.Kummallista kyllä, Kouta henkilöhahmona voidaan tulkita kahdella eri tavalla: hän voi olla äärimmäisen lahjakas ylimielinen nuori mies tai sitten vanha viisas tietäjä, joka kaikesta kokemuksestaan huolimatta himoitsee saavuttamatonta. Vaikka hänelle käy huonosti, tarina ei kuitenkaan ole täysin synkkä; pikemminkin Kouta herättää meissä ihailua vähän niin kuin Prometeus, toinen myyttinen kuolevainen joka uskalsi uhmata jumalia ja sai hirveän rangaistuksen.Koudan musiikillinen materiaali ei ole peräisin kansanperinteestä; itse asiassa suuri osa siitä perustuu täysin keinotekoiseen symmetriseen asteikkoon (1/2 - 1 - 1/2 - 1). Asteikkoa ei kuitenkaan noudateta orjallisesti. Musiikki heijastaa kylläkin tekstin balladimaisia ominaisuuksia sikäli, että kehittelyä on hyvin vähän - musiikin elementit toistuvat liki samassa asussa joka kerta esiintyessään. Musiikki pysyttelee suurimmaksi osaksi Fis-pohjaisena lukuun ottamatta Ajatar-jaksoa, jossa tonaalinen keskus on D.Rakenteellisesti kiitollinen teksti tarjoaa perinteisille balladeille tyypillisiä kolminkertaisia toistoja: tekstissä on kolme ‘matkustus’-jaksoa, joista viimeinen vie Koudan kuolemaansa, ja Maahisen ja Koudan keskeisessä dialogissa on kolme kysymys-vastaus -paria. Nämä muodostavat koetuksen, joka Koudan on läpäistävä matkallaan. Kuoro toimii melko suoraviivaisesti kertojana, joskin keskeisessä dialogipaikassa on erillinen puhuttu Kertojan rooli, joka sopii paremmin kohtauksen luonteeseen. Ainoa varsinainen syy sille, miksi teoksessa on kolmiääninen Maahinen (vähän kuin Kerberos, jos niin halutaan ajatella) ja kaksiääninen Ajatar (joka laulaa oktaaveissa), on ylimaallisen sointikuvan luominen näille yliluonnollisille olennoille.Kouta kantaesitettiin sävellyskonsertissani Helsingin Kamarikuoroviikolla maaliskuussa 1998; esittäjinä olivat Topi Lehtipuu (br), Tuuli Oksanen (s), Teppo Tolonen (kontratenori + kertoja), Tapiolan Kamarikuoro ja Sibelius-Akatemian soitinyhtye allekirjoittaneen johdolla.© Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, 1999
