Nordgren composed Cronaca (1991) and the Concerto No. 4 for violin and string orchestra (1994) for the Wegelius Chamber Orchestra, which also gave their first performances; Cronaca was first heard in Tammisaari in June 1991 and the Fourth Violin Concerto at the Viitasaari Time of Music festival in July 1994. The performance of Cronaca was conducted by the ensemble’s first artistic director, Ralf Sjöblom. Violin concerto was dedicated to Storgårds, who also played the solo and conducted at its premier.Nordgren’s twenty-odd concertos give the soloist an unusually dominating role, not so much that of a thrilling virtuoso, but the protagonist in what could be described as an abstract drama. Sometimes one has the impression that the soloist is the composer’s alter ego, wandering through a tapestry of sounds woven by the orchestra, giving vent to his emotions. In the one-movement Fourth Violin Concerto, the soloist again takes centre stage, and the whole work could be described as one long cadenza with orchestral accompaniment.Early on, the meditative figures played by the solo violin rise up against the dark, brooding acoustic backdrop of the strings. Gradually, the string section assumes a more active role, producing more varied worlds of sound. At the close, the music branches out in two directions: anguished outbursts and melancholy nostalgia.Cronaca, in four movements, builds up dynamic tension through contrasts between rather than within movements. The first movement (Adagio) presents a static soundscape from which the melody lines emerge. The second movement (Duo) divides the string section in two: the solo violin and solo viola converse against a partially aleatory background. The ensuing Agitato is the most dynamic and rhythmic movement. An Epilogo ends the piece on a nostalgic note. Descending patterns can be discerned twice in the slow-moving acoustic surface of the finale, which might bring to mind one of Nordgren’s favourite works, Arvo Pärt’s Cantus to the Memory of Benjamin Britten.Cronaca and the Fourth Violin Concerto are both evocative, expressive compositions, which do not deny the tragic dimension of life. In them one bears the voice of a composer who believes in the communicative and emotive power of music. Back in 1976, Nordgren described his faith as follows: "Music is not a separate, ‘made’ thing; and thus composing cannot be separated from life, from everything one sees and experiences and feels. Teoksen lopulta musiikki haarautuu kahtaalle: tuskaisiin purkauksiin ja haikean mollisävyiseen nostalgisuuteen.Cronaca on neliosainen teos, jonka dynamiikka perustuu enemmän osien välisten kuin niiden sisäisten jännitteiden varaan. Ensiosa (Adagio) avautuu kuulijalle staattisena sointimaisemana, josta melodialinjat nousevat esiin.
