Following upon Zona for cello and ensemble (1983-1990), Stroke for solo cello (1984), Moto for cello and piano (1988-1990), Steamboat Bill Jr. for clarinet and cello (1990), which was reworked as the Duo concertante for clarinet, cello and ensemble (1990-1992), this new cello concerto shows that Magnus Lindberg continues to assign the cello a privileged position in his oeuvre. If the treatment of the instrument recalls the solo cello writing in Stroke in this new work those elements are considerably amplified and pushed to new technical and expressive limits by the interaction with the orchestra.As in the Piano Concerto (1991-1993) the work is in one uninterrupted movement. The cello, omnipresent, seems to generate a large amount of the orchestral material. There is little sense of alternation between solo and tutti, but rather of overlapping, a complete state of osmosis flowing from the fusion of textures and the homogeneity of the material. The minor third that is stated by the cello at the beginning of the score thus gradually infuses the entire orchestral texture. Reflecting a similar concern for unity the harmonic material is most often generated from linear ideas that are initiated by the soloist.While retaining a very detailed rhythmic texture, typical of Lindberg's energetic style, this linearity is enriched by layers of sound that are extremely hierarchical and which demonstrate the composer's interest in counterpoint in recent years. "I no longer think of composition as being the arrangement of proportioned duration blocks," Magnus Lindberg told Peter Szendy in 1993, "and I think writing has more to do with fluid phenomena." Si le traitement de l'instrument renoue parfois avec celui de Stroke, il est dans cette nouvelle oeuvre considérablement amplifié, poussé aux limites de ses possibilités techniques et expressives, voire transcendé par les interactions avec l'orchestre.Comme dans le Concerto pour piano no 1 (1991-1993), la partition, d'un seul tenant, évolue sans interruption. Omniprésent, le violoncelle semble générer une large part du matériau orchestral. Il ne s'agit donc pas d'alternances entre le soliste et le tutti, mais bien plus d'une imbrication, d'un état d'osmose complète découlant de la fusion des textures et de l'homogénéité du matériau. Ainsi cette oscillation sur la tierce mineure qui, énoncée au début de la partition par le violoncelle, contamine petit à petit le tissu orchestral. Dans un souci identique d'unité, le tissu harmonique découle le plus souvent d'une présentation linéaire initiale du soliste.Sans rompre avec une écriture rythmique très travaillée, inhérente au style énergique de Lindberg, cette linéarité est enrichie de plans sonores extrêmement hiérarchisés qui témoignent de l'intérêt porté par le compositeur depuis ces dernières années pour l'écriture contrapuntique. «Je ne conçois plus la composition comme un agencement de blocs de durées proportionnées,» confiait Magnus Lindberg à Peter Szendy en 1993, «et je pense que l'écriture a plutôt à voir avec des phénomènes fluides.» Ainsi se présente son Concerto pour violoncelle : l'aboutissement d'une gestion à la fois souple et rigoureuse des flux du discours musical soulignée par une fusion nouvelle du vertical et de l'horizontal.© Corinne Schneider(for the premiere of the work, May 6, 1999)
