Kaneetti nro 4Kaneetti nro 4 (Refrain No. 4) is part of a series of five piano pieces composed in 1998-2001. The parts are prelude-like compositions smallish in duration and material. The name refers to a refrain at the end, making it in a way the opposite of a prelude; moreover, the Finnish word kaneetti bears a certain resemblance to sonata and cantata alluding to a type of a composition.Kaneetti nro 4 moves in mysterious and gloomy moods, with demons lurking behind it all which might bring the music of Scriabin in mind. Fourths and tritones are charasteristic of the harmony of the piece, and the soundscape is coloured with trills and tremolos.The piece begins quietly with a bell-like motif. With the bell motif continuing, the theme consisting of numerous fourths and tritones emerges moulding the piece. When developing the same, it starts to grow and becomes wilder with the speed of the triplets in the accompaniment building up to an explosive climax which releases quite quickly.Then, it is as though the same is engulfed by the bell motif, and it is heard in short banging sequences. Gradually, the music begins a new rise as if in an attempt to go over the previous shortened climax. This attempt is, however, doomed, and the consequence of the wild augmentation is only the falling on to nothing. Icy tremolos and languidly tinkling triplets remain fluttering in the pitch black mood.After this set-back, the theme seems to have no energy for a third attempt to climax. After the initial bell motif, quiet tremolos take over, and the theme echoes for the last time among the tremolos as if calling hopelessly from afar. Kaneetit ovat sekä kestoltaan että materiaaliltaan suppeahkoja, preludin kaltaisia sävellyksiä. Sävellysten otsikko viittaa loppukaneettiin, eli kyse on tavallaan preludin vastakohdasta. Kaneetti nro 4 liikkuu salaperäisissä ja synkänpuoleisissa tunnelmissa. Teoksen harmoniaa leimaavat kvartit ja tritonukset. Äänimaisemaa värittävät trillit ja tremolot.Teos alkaa hiljaa, kellomaisesti kolkuttavalla aiheella. Kelloaiheen jatkuessa kuullaan runsaasti kvartteja ja tritonuksia sisältävä teema, josta koko kappale rakentuu. Teemaa kehiteltäessä se alkaa vähitellen kasvaa ja hurjistua. Säestyksen triolien antamalla lisävauhdilla musiikki paisuu räjähdyksenomaiseen huipennukseen, joka kuitenkin laantuu hyvin pian.Tämän jälkeen teema tuntuu nielaisseen kelloaiheen ja se kuullaan lyhyinä, kolkuttavina katkelmina. Musiikki lähtee vähitellen uuteen nousuun ikään kuin pyrkiäkseen ylittämään äskeisen, lyhyeksi jääneen huipennuksen. Tämä yritys on kuitenkin tuhoon tuomittu, ja hurja nousun seurauksena onkin vain tipahtaminen tyhjän päälle. Hyytävät tremolot ja verkkaan kilkattavat triolit jäävät lepattamaan synkän tunnelman vallitessa.Tämän takaiskun jälkeen teemalla ei tunnu olevan voimia kolmanteen huipennusyritykseen. Alun kelloaiheen jälkeen hiljaiset tremolot valtaavat koko alan, ja teema kaikuu viimeisen kerran tremolojen seasta kuin jostakin kaukaa lohduttomasti huhuillen.© Juho Miettinen
