When I was commissioned to write a work for the combined mixed choirs (3,000 singers) at the Finnish-Estonian Song and Dance Festival in 2000, my first idea was to create a sort of sequel to Kuula’s Auringon noustessa (Sunrise), i.e. a brilliant, hymn-like, optimistic, possibly patriotic, etc., spectacle that could make opulent use of the choir’s vocal resources because of the large body of performers involved. However, I soon realized that I could not write anything credible along these lines, and it was a good thing I did: when I eventually saw the programme for the combined mixed choirs, all the other pieces on the list were in fact brilliant, hymn-like, etc. etc. - including the aforementioned Auringon noustessa.I finally started from a core idea linking the text of Psalm 47 O clap your hands to actual hand-clapping. This imported an association to gospel music (mainly through the influence of the film Blues Brothers, isn’t this fascinating by the way?), and the work eventually turned into a sort of gospel impression. The musical material is rather straighforward, being based on modal triad harmonies and having a strong rhythmic element. The polyphony is rudimentary and the development non-existent, and in fact the piece is fired by a single fervently expounded mood. The structure is a kind of half-baked rondo form whose most significant feature is the age-old trick of repeating music from the opening at the words Sicut erat in principio (‘as it was in the beginning’). The sort of overdrive made possible by a really large choir is not actually used until the final Amen cluster. The work can thus be performed with fewer than 3,000 singers. I must admit, though, that I was tempted to enter performance notes such as ‘only 100 high tenors’ in the score.The choice of language is a deliberate avoidance of the problem caused by the multi-national nature of the festival: I could not decide whether the work should be in Finnish or Estonian or both; ultimately, I settled on Latin, which has a sort of historical justification.© Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, 1999Kun minulta tilattiin teos yhdistetyille sekakuoroille (3,000 laulajaa) suomalais-virolaiseen laulu- ja tanssijuhlaan vuodelle 2000, oli ensimmäinen ajatukseni tuottaa eräänlainen Kuulan Auringon noustessa II, ts. loistelias, hymnimäinen, optimistinen, mahdollisesti isänmaallinen jne. spektaakkeli, jossa voisi käyttää kuoron äänivaroja todella tuhlailevasti suuren esiintyjäjoukon ansiosta. Totesin kuitenkin, että tästä lähtökohdasta en saa mitään riittävän uskottavaa aikaan, ja hyvä niin: kun sitten myöhemmin näin listan siitä, mitä muuta ohjelmistoa yhdistetyille sekakuoroille oli tiedossa, niin totesin, että kaikki muut teokset itse asiassa ovat loisteliaita, hymnimäisiä, jne. jne. - mukana mm. jo mainittu Auringon noustessa.Lähdin lopulta liikkeelle ideanpoikasesta, jossa psalmin 47 teksti Taputtakaa käsiänne, kaikki kansat yhdistyi laulajien kättentaputuksiin. Tämä assosioi gospel-musiikkiin (lähinnä Blues Brothers -elokuvan myötävaikutuksella, eikö olekin mielenkiintoista?), ja teoksesta tuli lopulta eräänlainen gospel-mukaelma. Musiikillinen materiaali on suhteellisen yksioikoista modaalista kolmisointuharmonioihin perustuvaa ja rytmisesti voimakkaan korostettua.Polyfonia on alkeellista ja kehittely olematonta, ja teos onkin yhden tunnelman kappale, jossa riemukasta tekstiä hehkutetaan fiilispohjalta. Rakenne on jonkinlainen puolivillainen rondomuoto, jonka merkittävin piirre on ikivanha jippo käyttää teoksen alun musiikkia uudestaan doksologian kohdassa Sicut erat in principio (‘niinkuin alussa ollut on’). Jättikuoron mahdollistamia revityksiä ei oikeastaan ole viimeistä Amen-klusteria lukuunottamatta. Teoksen voi siis esittää vähemmilläkin kuin 3000 laulajalla. Oli tosin suuri houkutus laittaa nuottiin sellaisia esitysohjeita kuin ‘vain 100 kirkkaampaa tenoria’.Teoksen kielivalinta oli keino väistää ongelma, joka syntyi juhlien monikansallisuudesta; en osannut päättää olisiko teoksen kieli pitänyt olla suomi vai viro vai molempia, joten lopulta päätin käyttää psalmitekstiä latinaksi.
