Action-Situation-Signification was written for the Toimii ensemble in Paris in the spring of 1982. This ensemble, which was created in the summer 1980 when Lindberg was preparing a performance of Stockhausen's Plus-Minus with a group of musicians, composer and sound/computer engineer friends, has enabled him to build on the experience he acquired playing in a piano duo. Toimii ('It works'), a musical laboratory rather than an ensemble in the strict sense of the word, gave Lindberg the chance to experiment and write extreme pieces, which he would never have been able to produce with other groups.Action-Situation-Signification is an exceptional piece which bears Globokar's influence in its conception of the use of extramusical sources in the construction of a piece of music, if not directly in its musical writing. Looking back some years later, Lindberg wrote: "Only the extreme is interesting - striving for a balanced totality is nowadays an impossibility. An original mode of expression can only be achieved throughh the marginal (a romantic perception?) - the hypercomplex combined with the primitive". Cet ensemble, dont la naissance remonte à l'été 1980 alors que Lindberg préparait une exécution de Plus-Minus de Stockhausen avec ses amis musiciens, compositeurs et ingénieurs de son-informaticiens, lui permet de prolonger les expériences qu'il avait acquises en jouant du piano en duo. Toimii («Ça marche»), un laboratoire musical plutôt qu'un ensemble dans le sens traditionnel, donnait à Lindberg l'occasion d'expérimenter et d'écrire des choses extrêmes, qu'il n'aurait jamais pu réaliser avec les formations constituées.Action-Situation-Signification est une pièce exceptionnelle, qui montre l'influence de Globokar, sinon dans son écriture musicale, du moins dans sa conception d'utilisation de sources extramusicales dans l'élaboration d'une pièce de musique. Lindberg écrivait alors : «Seul ce qui est poursuivi jusqu'à l'extrême est intéressant - la recherche d'un ensemble équilibré est aujourd'hui impossible. On ne peut parvenir à un mode d'expression original que dans des zones marginales comme en associant l'hypercomplexe et le primitif.»Action-Situation-Signification cherche des correspondances entre les sons enregistrés dans la nature (bruits) et les sons produits par les instruments. La classification des sonorités est effectuée à partir des idées que Pierre Schaeffer exprimait dans son Traité des objet musicaux (Lindberg observera plus tard que sa classification était plus proche des conceptions de Helmut Lachenmann que de celles de Pierre Schaeffer). L'ouvrage Masse und Macht (Masse et puissance, Gallimard, 1986) d'Elias Canetti, qui décrit les caractéristiques des phénomènes de la nature, a également joué un rôle important dans l'élaboration de cette pièce. Les mouvements (Terre 1, La mer, Interlude : bois, Pluie, Interlude : métal, Feu, Vent, Terre 2) alternent des enregistrements bruts et statiques de la nature («situation») et le jeu des musiciens («action») ; les situations sont ainsi dynamisées et produisent, selon le compositeur, un sens («signification»).
