The string quartet reflects a desire to examine and express in music feelings of fear and terror that grow to almost uncontrollable proportions and threaten to possess the entire soul. Nevonmaa said that the string quartet is an attempt to interpret not only his own emotions but also fear in general by reliving Finland’s Winter War with the Soviet Union, the way the rank and file overcame the horrors of war that threatened to strangle them, the knowledge that death might carry them off at any moment.This being the case, there are not many ‘beautiful’, harmonious string sounds in the work. Instead it abounds in blood-chilling flageolet and sul ponticello effects, glissandos and a ‘sawing’ on the strings that rampages right through the quartet before finally assuming monstrous proportions.The form of the work corresponds to the underlying idea. Its progress is marked by a sort of ‘precipitousness’ bordering on hysteria: a given character may overrun the music and in a flash grow and swell until it is almost uncontrollable. Yet the overall form is very compact. Hence the quartet does not leave the listener feeling distressed. The listening experience is ultimately liberating, for the listener is not merely caught up in feelings of fear and terror: he also overcomes them.© Kalevi Aho (1998)(translated by © Susan Sinisalo)Jousikvarteton taustalla on pyrkimys tutkia ja ilmentää musiikin avulla melkein hallitsemattomiin mittoihin kasvavia, koko sielun valtaavia pelon ja kauhun tuntemuksia. Nevonmaa on kertonut itse, että hän pyrki jousikvartettoa säveltäessään tulkitsemaan omien tuntemustensa lisäksi pelkoa yleisemminkin eläytymällä Suomen talvisotaan – siihen, miten tavallinen rivimies pystyi selviytymään sodan kuristavista kauhuista, ajatuksesta että kuolema voi tulla milloin tahansa omalle kohdalle.Teoksessa ei esiinny tästä syystä paljonkaan ”kauniita”, harmonisia jousisävyjä. Tunnusomaisempia ovat hyytävästi soivat flageoletit ja sul ponticello -soinnit, glissandot sekä jousten ”sahaus”, joka saattaa myllertää kautta koko kvartetin ja kasvaa lopulta rajuihin huipennuksiin.Teoksen muoto vastaa sen taustaideaa. Muodon etenemiselle on tunnusomaista tietty hysteriaa lähentelevä ”äkkijyrkkyys”: jokin tietty karakteri saattaa vallata musiikin ja kasvaa ja paisua hetkessä lähes hallitsemattomaksi. Silti kokonaisuudelle on ominaista myös muodon ankara tiiveys. Tästä syystä kvartetto ei jätä ahdistavaa loppuvaikutelmaa. Kuuntelukokemus on lopulta vapauttava – kysymys on paitsi pelon ja ja kauhun tunteiden kokemisesta, myös niiden voittamisesta ja ylitsepääsemisestä.© Kalevi Aho (1998)
