Esa Onttonen occupies multiple roles in the field of jazz music, being a guitar player, composer, arranger, teacher and record producer. He has written music for his own bands and many other ensembles, and he is one of the founders of the Fiasko Records jazz label. He has been commissioned by the Jyväskylä Big Band and by UMO Jazz Orchestra and by various smaller ensembles.
