Ilkka Kuusisto has played a large number of roles on the Finnish musical scene, having been a church organist, jazz pianist, radio producer, conductor and opera manager in addition to his work as a composer. He is one of Finland’s most prolific opera composers, with an output ranging from broad humour to serious drama and from children’s musical to grand opera. “Kuusisto’s operas are usually written in a clearly tonal style, sometimes extending even to popular music or musical comedy,” writes Kimmo Korhonen. His extensive career as conductor of various choirs is apparent in the large number of choral pieces in his output.
