"Aarre Merikanto was the most earthy and florid of the Finnish Modernists, both as a composer and as a personality. He combined Finnish national elements such as folk dance rhythms with his Modernism, and even his principal work, the opera Juha, is set in a Finnish wilderness despite the universal applicability of its love-triangle story.
