Erkki Aaltonen matured as a composer in the 1930s, a period in which Finnish music had swung towards national and traditional values after a decade of Modernism. National Romanticism became the foundation of Aaltonen’s style, although in a few later works he did assimilate features from trends in postwar Finnish music.
