Pekka Jalkanen is a minimalist interested in ethnic and archaic themes. His extensive body of work includes three operas, five concertos, orchestral, chamber, and choral music, song cycles, film scores, and music for children. His subject matter ranges from the ancient melodic traditions of Finno-Ugric peoples to Latin American, Romani, and ancient music. His interest in rare instruments is reflected in his numerous works for the kantele and the decacorde. Jalkanen is also known as a music researcher.
