Eero Hämeenniemi discovered his personal idiom on a journey from Modernism to Neo-Expressionism and even Neo-Romanticism. Influences from southern Indian classical music have been an important part of his music since the 1990s, not as superimposed exotica but as deeply integrated elements. Improvisation is an important aspect of his music, and he is himself an active musician as well as a composer: “What interests me is musicianship. This takes in various functions: playing, composing, performing, improvising. [...] Indian musicians take it for granted that I play and sing as well.” Eero Hämeenniemi is also known for his extensive literary output.
