Matti Pakkanen has composed for a large variety of settings reaching from solo instruments to orchestra, often including more unusual instruments such as traditional Chinese instruments or microtonal instruments of his own design. His microtonal approach is driven by a desire to rescue the emotional intelligibility of harmonic tone relations, as it is self evident in tonal music, also in the realm of contemporary aesthetics.
