Jorma Panula is a Finnish conductor. Panula is also known as a composer, arranger and especially a teacher of orchestral conducting at the Sibelius Academy, where he made a career as Professor of Orchestral Conducting between 1973–1993 – along with his master classes around the world. His conductor studies have included renowned conductors like Esa-Pekka Salonen, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Osmo Vänskä, Sakari Oramo, Susanna Mälkki and Mikko Franck. His operas Jaakko Ilkka and the River Opera established a new genre called ’performance opera’, which fused music, visual art and the art of daily life. Panula’s other compositions include musicals, church music, a violin concerto, jazz capriccio and numerous pieces of vocal music.
