Esa-Pekka Salonen is not only an internationally celebrated conductor but also a significant composer. Being a conductor, he has excellent command of writing for both large and small orchestra in a way that is gratifying for the musicians. His orchestral works include his greatest successes. He began his composing career under the auspices of European Modernism, but his relocation to Los Angeles in the 1990s brought new, more relaxed tones to his idiom – “rich sonorities, energetic dancelike rhythms and an almost Neo-Romantic melodic flow,” as Kimmo Korhonen wrote of LA Variations (1996/1997). Salonen moves effortlessly between idioms and has been compared to composers as diverse as Stravinsky, Lutoslawski and John Adams.
