Description

On a June Saturday in 2011, I happened to wander into the buddhist pagoda in Bois de Vincennes in Paris. Having no religious senses at all, I never get the sprituality of cathedrals, shrines or suchlike - but I admire their architecture, beauty and history.

On an indoor wall of that pagoda, I spotted two poems by zen buddhist philosophers, and their nature immediately awoke my inspiration, they were music in my mind right away.

Instead of just typical piano, I decided to accompany the soprano with a quartet of flute, clarinet, violin and cello, to make the music more colourful. In the end "Zen" is perhaps not a work for soprano and a quartet, but rather a quintet where the singer is just one of the instruments.

The work was finished on October the 17th in 2011.
