Sälskär is a tone poem inspired by an island north-east of the Åland main island. It is a wonderful place on a sunny summer day, the lighthouse rising high and birds socializing noisily. A frightening place in a winter storm - roaring wind and plates of ice hitting hard the shores of the island. People have lived very hard life on this desolate island, tending the lighthouse. Now only birds and seals populate Sälskär (= Seal island). 'Sälskär' is about life, feeling of warm sunshine and icy wind on the skin.
