Prelude, Toccata and Postlude
Description
The Prelude, Toccata and Postlude for cello and piano was composed in 1974. My intention was to create a real virtuoso piece and to explore the technical and motoric possibilities of the cello as well as of the piano. The Prelude’s character is like an improvisatory introduction; the wild Toccata follows and goes to the extreme limits of capacity for both players, and after the trapeze figures of the Toccata the piece calms down to the beautiful, sad music of the Postlude. The Prelude, Toccata and Postlude was first performed on 14 February 1977 in Helsinki by Erkki Rautio, cello, and Ralf Gothóni, piano.
