Narcissus
Description
Narcissus was composed as a set piece for the international Maj Lind Piano Competition in Helsinki 2002, but also it was an outcome of my love for symmetry. Symmetrical scales, inversions of melodies and mirror harmonies have in fact always been typical of my music - ever since I wrote Three Symmetric Preludes when still a student at the Sibelius Academy in the 1940s. Narcissus does not really "describe" anything, but it turned out to be so much a mirror game with virtuosic motifs that the only correct name for it was Narcissus.
