Description

Kokemukseni harmonikasta teoksessa Metal Work, jonka tein 1984 harmonikalle ja metallisille lyömäsoittimille, osoittivat minulle tämän instrumentin uskomattomat mahdollisuudet.

The title Metal Work refers to the characteristics of the two instruments which make up the piece: the reeds of the accordion and the metallic percussion instruments, particularly the vibraphone, which were specifically chosen for Metal Work. The metallic timbres pave the way for the sound universe of Kraft, which was already on the composer's work-bench when Metal Work was being composed. Written in Berlin, where Lindberg spent the 1984-1985 season, thanks to a grant from the Goethe Institut, Metal Work originated in a suggestion from the Finnish accordionist Matti Rantanen, who performed it for the first time at the Joensuu song festival in Finland. A parallel version was presented by the pianist Jouko Laivuori, who played the accordion part on a synthesizer at a concert in Finnish radio's Musica nova series in October 1989.
