Description

Teos alkaa hauraasti ja staattisesti sellon näykkivien fragmenttien kasvattaessa enteellistä jännitettä. Lyhyen henkeä pidättävän kenraalipaussin jälkeen synkooppiaihe johtaa romahdukseen. Seuraa alkua muistuttava, mutta sen verran tukevampi koraali, että sooloviulu ja -alttoviulu uskaltautuvat sen pinnalle lyyriseen duettoon. Sellon fragmentit eivät enää tunnu uhkaavilta: tälllä kertaa jännite syntyy rytmin menetettyä symmetrisyytensä.

Nimi "Kuin huokaus" on assosiaationi teoksen ehkä kuvallisimmasta eleestä: korkeitten viulujen voimistuvista ja taas vaimenevista klustermaisista trillikentistä. Nämä hypnoottisen basson säestämät 'noitakuoron huokaukset' kehystävät teoksen huippukohtaa, jossa alun näykkivistä enteistä rakentuneella kiihkeällä säestyksellä sellosoolosta kasvaa viulujen akrobaattinen rynnistys.

Teokselle peilimäistä muotoa antavien muistumien myötä käännymme paluumatkalle, mutta viimeisen sanan saakin alkupuolella huomaamattomasti sivuutettu motiivi.

Kuin huokaus (Like a Sigh), a fantasia for string orchestra no 1 (1999) begins in brittle, static vein as snapping cello fragments generate a portentous tension. After a brief, breath-holding general pause the syncopated motif leads to collapse. Then comes a chorale reminiscent of the opening but now more robust in that the solo violin and viola are emboldened to engage in a lyrical duet on the surface. The cello fragments no longer sound ominous; this time the tension derives from the fact that the rhythm has lost its symmetry.

The name Like a Sigh is my image of the work’s possibly most symbolical gesture: the waxing and waning cluster-like trill webs on high violins. These “witches’ chorus sighs” accompanied by a hypnotic bass frame the climax of the work in which an acrobatic spurt on the violins grows out of the cello solo built on the snapping opening gestures to a frenzied accompaniment.

Through flashbacks that give the work a mirror form we turn homewards again, but the last word is given to a motif passed by unnoticed during the first half.
